Blogger is a free platform by Google for blogging which provides hosting facility and domain name for free. However the domain name provided by Blogger is a subdomain name like: www.yoursite.blogspot.com. You may need to change your blog name to a more user-friendly and unique one. Blogger provides facilities to add a custom domain name like: www.yoursite.com.

You have to buy the domain name from a domain name provider. We selected Hostgator and the steps for setting up are almost the same with other providers.

Steps to set up your new domain name:

  1. Buying a custom domain name from a domain name provider like Hostgator, Namecheap, Godaddy…etc.
  2. Adding the domain name to the Blogger in setting section.
  3. Copying the CNAMEs provided by Google into a notepad (it is easy then)
  4. Logging in to the Cpanal of your domain name provider
  5. Find Advanced DNS zone editor found under domains section.
  6. Adding CNAME records copied into the notepad.
  7. Adding four A records to configure your Blogger domain one by one.
  8.

Setting up a domain name is not very difficult one. After buying the domain name, if you have any difficulties to set up, the service providers provide 24hrs online support to any question you face. If you find yourself stuck, you can live chat with a customer care officer who will guide you through the process.

Step 01. Buying a domain name

First you need to visit the website of the domain name provider. Here we selected Hostgator. You may visit hostgator.com and buy a domain name. You can click on the domain in the menu or scroll down to find domain section. Click on it and enter your domain name preferred. (If you use this link, it would give me a commission) It usually might be between 4$ - 12$ per year. You may first write few names related to the blog in case if the name is already taken.

Step 02. Adding the domain name to Blogger

Log into your Blogger dashboard and click on the setting section and find custom domains under publishing section. Enter the domain name you bought from the domain name provider and click on save.

Step 03. Copying CNAMEs

When you click on save button you will be given a warning message regarding verification. Here you will have to copy the two CNAMEs provided by Google. (they are underlined in the example below.) First CNAME has two sections as Name and Destination; copy them separately. Do the same to the next CNAME too.

Step 04. Logging in to the Cpanel of the domain name provider.

Now you have to enter the CNAMEs you copied in the control panel of the domain name provider to create the link between your blog and the name provider. Log-in to the C-panel using the username and password you provided when creating your account. URL for Cpanel like tp://example.com/cpanel, replace example.com with actual domain name.

Step 05. Finding Advanced DNS zone editor

At the control panel find the DNS zone editor under domain section. This is where you should add the CNAMEs.

Step 06. Adding CNAME records copied into the notepad

First select the domain name from the combo box and click on add record option.

Add the details of the first CNAME record. Copy paste the details you have arranged in the notepad. Select CNAME from the type option combo box. Again copy the CNAME from the notepad. Finally click on the add record button.

Follow the same procedure to add the second CNAME. Once adding the details click on the Add record button. Add an appropriate Time-To-Live in the TTL field.

Step 07. Adding four A records

You can do this to step six if you want. You have to add four A records separately one by one. You can use the IP addresses given below.

Now you have successfully added a custom domain to your blog. After adding the custom domain on blogger please ensure to check on the Redirect Domain and the HTTPS Redirect on in the publishing section of your setting. Usually the DNS transfer happens within few hours. It usually does not take more than eight hours. To check whether your custom domain working, enter your new web address in the address bar.
